Year in Review 2019 — Matic Network

As we cross over to the new decade after the holiday season, it’s always valuable to look back at the year in reflection. 2019 was a huge year for Matic Network. From holding the best performing IEO in the industry to date, to our huge progress on the technical development front and outstanding rates of adoption, we have surpassed even our own expectations for this year and have laid the foundation for an even more impressive year ahead.

We have attracted the attention of much of the wider blockchain space, resulting in 40+ Dapps onboarding and exploring integration with Matic Network, in various categories from gaming to DeFi. MATIC has been listed on over 20 exchanges including Binance, Binance DEX, and one of Korea’s biggest exchanges, Coinone. Our mission to accelerate the decentralized movement has also seen us attend countless high-profile events and support the industry’s BUIDLers at more than 40 hackathons across the globe. This is only the surface.

Let’s look back at 2019 and all we have accomplished, beginning with our IEO on Binance Launchpad.

Binance Launchpad IEO

It was an honor to work alongside Binance to launch our IEO in April of this year, as part of the Binance Launchpad program. With the assistance of the world’s largest exchange, we not only held a hugely successful token sale ( the best performing IEO in the industry to date!) but we were also able to get MATIC into the hands of a huge number of the wider community in a fair manner via Binance’s lottery system.

We took a pragmatic approach to our token economics and distribution, with the long-term success of the Matic Network ecosystem explicitly in mind. Our token distribution reflects this, with enough being allocated towards the future running of the Matic blockchain whilst enabling as many tokens as possible to be distributed to the community.

Support from Coinbase & Binance

Our experience, unique vision and innovative solution has captured the attention of much of the cryptospace, leading to collaboration with some of the most recognisable industry leaders even since the very beginning of our journey.

Coinbase Ventures

We were thrilled to have Coinbase Ventures as our Seed Round investor. Coinbase is one of the best and most trusted exchange platforms in the world. We are proud to have Coinbase Ventures supporting us in our journey!

Since our IEO on Binance Launchpad, we have forged a solid relationship with Binance which has continued to grow in strength to this day. We consistently support and attend many meetups, events and hackathons alongside one another with the mutual goal of accelerating the decentralized movement. It is an honor to be working so closely with the world’s largest and most popular exchange.

Integrations & Research Collaborations

Dapp onboarding and the formation of research collaborations has been occurring at a staggering rate, even surpassing our own expectations. We are consistently onboarding Dapps to our network and have grown to become the most adopted Layer 2 solution, even entering the ranks of the top 10–15 blockchain platforms in the space in terms of adoption. There are now 40+ Dapps integrated or in the process of integrating with Matic. Here are some adoption highlights from 2019.

One of the leading forces behind the decentralised gaming movement, Decentraland is a virtual reality platform which allows users to create, experience, and monetize content and applications. Using Matic’s infrastructure, Decentraland will scale their in-game transactions to lightning-fast speeds, giving users a superb UX. Matic will scale Decentraland’s entire in-game marketplace.

In July we were thrilled to welcome high-throughput, low-latency and low-fee Layer 1 platform Harmony into our ecosystem. By integrating Matic Network, the platform will leverage the power of Layer 2 to compound its performance to even greater levels.

Incento is a peer to peer payments application leveraging decentralized components, bringing together utility + scalability + user & business friendly features. See Incento being used to demonstrate DeFi adoption at the ETHIndia 2019 DevLounge, running on Matic Network.

BetProtocol is using Matic Network as their scalability solution to make truly scalable betting applications possible. BetProtocol allows entrepreneurs and developers to create their own betting platforms in minutes. We also recently joined forces to launch a hugely successful token sale for their native BEPRO utility token using MATIC tokens.

SpringRole is enabling seamless blockchain integration with the recruitment sector via their platform. It’s aim is to make it easier for employers to instantly verify the legitimacy of candidate profiles. By building on top of Matic Network’s sidechains, SpringRole is able to scale their network faster and more effectively for job recruiters to find their ideal candidates around the world.

Koinfox is a trading platform with over 50K users from 30+ countries, designed to empower users with advanced tools and features to automate their strategies, minimize risk and maximize results across multiple exchanges. Matic is providing the transactional infrastructure for the Koinfox platform.

Biconomy aims to recreate the Dapp experience by enabling meta transactions (negating the need for transaction fees to be paid on the user’s side) for seamless onboarding, using Matic Network’s infrastructure.

Zawadi is a mobile ticket delivery platform that provides event organizers and ticketing companies with the tools and APIs to deliver tokenized event tickets to their attendees through social media messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram & Facebook. Through Zawadi’s integration with Matic, each ticket holder will be able to store their tokenized ticket on the blockchain.

Tech Updates

Our technical expertise and unique approach to Layer 2 scaling is what has generated so much attention from many players in the wider blockchain space. Our team of 10+ full time developers and engineers have been working relentlessly all year to deliver the infrastructure for the Web 3.0 movement.

Matic Wallet

On April 27th the Matic Wallet was officially introduced. The Matic Wallet is an easy to use crypto wallet with native support for Plasma chains. It comes with WalletConnect and Dagger integrations to provide impeccable user experience.

Testnet Launch

Delivered ahead of schedule, the Testnet launch in early June was our first major network development milestone, allowing Dapp teams to test their migration scripts and enabling the Matic team to test the latest updates in the validator node and latest smart contracts. Once everything was successfully tested, it was time to launch the Alpha Mainnet.

Alpha Mainnet

We launched the Matic Network Alpha Mainnet on the 29th of June 2019. The Alpha Mainnet is Matic Network’s sidechain working on the top of the Ethereum Mainnet, allowing developers to build and test their full end to end applications. We received a lot of support from projects wanted to join Matic’s Alpha Mainnet launch.

Heimall & Bor

In the run-up to the launch of our Beta mainnet, the Matic team was tirelessly working on Heimdall (the Validator layer) and Bor (Block Producer implementation). We released a dedicated article outlining the importance and an explanation of these critical components of our infrastructure.

Beta Mainnet

The Beta Mainnet officially went live at the end of September, and included a slew of new components and features such as Heimdall, Bor and Plasma predicates. 6 projects (4 new to the Matic ecosystem and 2 existing), went live on our Beta Mainnet upon launch. The launch of the Beta Mainnet is a major step forward toward our final Mainnet release.

Counter Stake

We have been working relentlessly on enabling the Proof-of-Stake layer on Matic Network for a long time, and we were thrilled to reveal in late November that Counter Stake (Matic’s public incentivized staking testnet event) is officially live!

One of our core goals is to assist the BUIDLers of Web 3.0 to spread their wings and make a difference in the global decentralized movement. We have therefore organised and supported more than 50+ hackathons this past year across the globe, but especially focusing on India.

We regularly provide a range of innovative bounty tracks to encourage hackers to try their hand at blockchain development, and are always honored by the number of developers who decide to BUIDL on Matic Network. Here are a few of the innovative hacks built on Matic at these events in 2019.

BlockLeague is a generalized fantasy league smart contract allowing users to bet on teams participating in Axie Infinity’s Battles using the DAI stablecoin, which utilized Matic Network to settle faster and cheaper using our high-throughput, low-cost infrastructure. BlockLeague was built at the Game Oasis Hackathon Bengaluru, which Matic held a prominent role in supporting.

Community Growth

We have one of the strongest communities in the space, which we are extremely proud of and thankful for. Our supporters who are following our journey can see our progress advancing week by week, and therefore know they are part of something big. For this reason we have seen huge growth of our communities across all our social platforms and have witnessed our regional communities beginning to boom.

We have also recently welcomed onboard our team of elite Matic Mitra (project ambassadors), whose primary objective is to curate a global outreach program that empowers individuals in different international cities to further Matic Network’s engagement with local blockchain communities. We already have many initiatives lined up from our Mitras over the coming months. Together, we are bringing Matic strongly into the global spotlight!

The community is crucial, and we will continue to nurture and grow our supporter base as we continue to advance on our journey.

Community Outreach

Engaging with members of the wider crypto community is the most effective way to spread the word of Matic Network’s mission and encourage the growth of our supporter base. We, therefore, relish any opportunity to connect with the broader community to share our insights and have engaged in countless interviews & AMAs during the past 12 months. Here are a few examples of our efforts.

Interview with Blockchain Brad

We regularly join industry influencers on their platforms to keep the wider crypto community updated with our progress. Here is one such interview with Blockchain Brad.

Matic x SpringRole joint AMA

AMAs are the most effective way to directly connect with the community to share our insights and answer direct questions. Not only do we regularly attend AMAs in wider community groups to spread the word of Matic far and wide, but we also often hold AMAs alongside our ecosystem project partners in order to spread awareness of the latest updates in the Matic ecosystem.

Interview with Justin Wu at E3

Justin Wu, founder of DGA (Digital Games and Assets) interviewed Matic’s COO & Co-founder, Sandeep Nailwal, during this year’s E3 conference, where we sponsored E3’s first-ever Blockchain Stage.

Our CPO, Anurag Arjun, was also interviewed on the Blockchain Stage. Anurag elaborated on how Matic’s infrastructure would facilitate high throughout of in-game transactions and interactions between end-users.

Not only was this a huge opportunity for Matic to interact with the core gaming community, but the presence of the first-ever Blockchain Stage also signifies blockchain’s growing presence in the gaming space. We were thrilled to be a part.

Interview on CNBC’s Crypto Trader

We have appeared in many prominent media outlets since the beginning of our journey. In this interview, our COO & Co-founder, Sandeep Nailwal, joined Ran NeuNer of CNBC Africa’s Crypto Trader for an in-depth discussion during Korea Blockchain Week.

Exchange Listings

Exchange listings are key priority of the Matic Network team. We understand the importance of increased liquidity, visibility and reach across different territories through exchange listings. We are therefore thrilled at our progress on this front since our IEO and subsequent listing on Binance, the world’s biggest exchange, in April this year. Other listings include the following.

In June, we were excited to announce that MATIC had been listed on industry leading digital asset exchange BitMax.

MATIC token was also listed on Wazirx in June as part of their Rapid Listing Initiative. Wazirx is one of India’s largest crypto exchanges, so we were thrilled to be expanding the availability of MATIC to the Indian community.

Binance DEX

In-line with our efforts to make MATIC utility tokens more accessible to our global community, MATIC was officially listed on Binance DEX in August. Pairing the Matic Network community with Binance DEX has not only strengthened the decentralized finance ecosystem but has also provided greater liquidity for the existing circulating MATIC supply.

We officially entered the Korean market in September with the listing of MATIC on prominent Korea-based exchange Coinone, a top-tier crypto asset exchange with one of the largest user bases in Korea.

Team Expansion

The consistent progress of Matic Network is all a result of our superstar team line-up. As we progressed on our journey, we brought in more hands to assist us with our efforts and accelerate our advancement. This year we have welcomed onboard 5 new core team members, as well as a considerable amount of wider team members to assist us in our regional marketing and community growth efforts.

Meet our new core team members

Moving to the New Matic Office

In order to accommodate our growing team and provide us with the right space to move forward most effectively on our mission, we recently moved our headquarters to the ‘Silicon Valley of India’, Bangalore. In our new headquarters, the Matic Haveli, we now have dedicated spaces for our development team, our marketing team, and for hosting meetings and events such as our Ethereum India Meetup Series.

Closing Thoughts

We’ve come a long way this past year, but our journey has only just begun. We have laid down the foundation for our continued progress, and over the coming year we expect to cement our position at the forefront of not only India’s blockchain space, but will also continue to establish Matic Network as a key player in the wider global decentralized movement.

Our goal is to serve as more than simply a scaling solution, but as an entire global collaborative ecosystem of Dapps running on Matic Network which will become stronger together as the ecosystem expands. We couldn’t be more thrilled to see this already coming to fruition.

As we move onwards to the next stage in our exciting journey, we would like to thank our amazing community for their continued support. 2020 will bring huge advancement for Matic Network as we continue to accelerate our fundamental progress. We are more excited than ever to be BUIDLing the infrastructure for the Web 3.0 movement!
